WEEK # 8 ONLINE APPLICATIONS AND TOOLS ACTIVITY 3 19 WEB 2.0 AWARDS

I really liked this site. I chose Books (guess that was hard to imagine) and went into Lulu.com. It is a self publishing site. This is wonderful for anyone who wants to publish but doesn't want to go through a large publishing house. There is also no restriction on number of copies. I like the option of publishing your dissertation. You can save it for all time. There are quite a lot of options from which you can choose from. It also has librarything.com which we looked at earlier in this learning process. I then checked out squidoo.com. I was not as impressed with this site. The lens eye featured an article on titanum rings. This site is for people who are passionate about an idea, invention, book, or hobby. I clicked on the link and it sent me to a site from Smyth's Jewelery store here in Baltimore and they talked about diamonds. There wasn't any mention about titanium rings???? I then checked out a link on medieval gardening. That was really cool! It had great pictures of the gardens as well as organic gardening and raised bed gardens. Very informative. Once again, it is useful, but it just depends on where and what information has been added to the site-it could be helpful or just another site that you didn't get the information you needed. For library use, I loved Lulu.com ( a self publishing site) and LibraryThing.com. Patrons could self publish or blog about books that they really like.

WEEK # 8 ONLINE APPLICATIONA AND TOOLS

I looked at the Zoho Writer at the Library Templates. I was really surprised to see the resume letters and cover letters and resumes listed. It was so great to have them as a reference while someone would be composing their documents. I also liked the speech outline. It made it sound so simple. The thought of a speech seems to overwhelm people, including myself, but the bold type seems to make it sound and look so simple. The sample report card was really neat. The cooking receipe template was really cool....now if I just had a million hours to organize all my receipes I would be in great shape! I liked the spell check. Patrons ask us for help all the time when they are writing their resumes.

WEEK # 7 LEARNING 2.0 SANDBOX WIKI

I had great fun with this one. I looked at other people's blogs. It is interesting to read about what people have entered and learned throughout this experience. I liked the blog listing people's favorite books. I picked up a few that I would want to read. I also added my blog to the CCPL listing. Check it out!

WEEK # 7 WIKIS

I had a lot of fun looking at the Wikis. I was familiar with the Wiki because Scott came to our branch and showed us wikis. He explained where the name came from-well, here is the info. from PLCMC's wiki.

...and other information to keep staff in the Technology Loop

Tuesday, April 25, 2006
Wiki, Wiki, Wiki!
One of the most interesting things about technology advancing as fast as it does is the effect it has on language. The English language has always been a very fluid thing, incorporating new phrases as quickly as there are new concepts to explain, and so a wide variety of terms has arisen to describe the changing technology of the modern world. Thus we talk about blogs, iPods, mp3s, podcasting, and... wikis?

A Wiki is a quick-to-build, easy-to-edit website on which all information can be edited, changed, or rewritten by the users or members of the site. It is an incredibly useful tool for collaborative writing, pooling knowledge or exchanging ideas, especially on a subject that changes or needs updating frequently.

The word "Wiki" comes from the Hawaiian phrase "wiki wiki", which is commonly used to indicate something fast. The first Wiki ever made was WikiWikiWeb, an attempt to make an easily updatable website about certain trends in software development. It was started in 1995 and has been added to and continually updated since then.

The largest wiki in the world is the English language version of Wikipedia, which has been estimated at having over a million entries. Wikipedia is an open-source encyclopedia, an attempt to gather detailed information about a variety of subjects.

The advantage that Wikipedia - and by extension all wikis - over a conventional website is the fact that all of the wiki's users are potentially its authors. This means that when new information is discovered about a subject, it is quickly added to the collective knowledge base. Unlike a conventional encyclopedia, where editors have to find experts for different subject areas, and nothing gets published without their say-so, anybody can write a wikipedia entry. If you have knowledge about a given subject area, you can write an entry about it. If there is already an entry but it doesn't cover something, you can edit it to add your information. Wikis are dynamic and collective, updating quickly to take account of new developments, and drawing on the expertise of a very broad, very deep readership. Wikis are also not as limited as most encyclopedias in what they talk about. Wikipedia especially has entries on subjects as diverse as the rivalries between different newsgroups, Australian constitutional crises, the love lives of English footballers, and the current storylines in the Spider-Man comics. These are maintained and updated by enthusiasts with interests in and passion for these subjects.

The disadvantage a wiki has is ironically the same as its advantage. Being written by its readers, and having little in the way of editorial control, a wiki is prone to being subjective, or strongly influenced by opinion. Someone with a grudge against a particular public figure, for example, could edit their entry to make derogatory remarks about them, or simply delete the page altogether. Controversial subjects are occasionally the site of "editing wars", where an entry is edited multiple times in quick succession by people on opposing sides of an issue. Because of this lack of vetting of entries, many teachers do not allow students to use wikipedia as an information source.

Some library systems list transporatation to their city, resturants, blog a book, job listings, photos and lots more. The possibilites are endless. The wiki can be a representation of your library, community and state. It is very personalized to meet your needs.

WEEK #5 ACTIVITY 10 ONLINE IMAGE GENERATOR

I had fun with this exercise. The only thing that was interesting was that I tried for 3 hours to create my avatar and then found out that there is only one computer that works! Not so much fun!

Here she is!

WEEK #6 WEB 2.0, LIBRARY 2.0 AND THE FUTURE OF LIBRARIES

I found the articles on Library 2.0 very interesting. I thing Michael Stephens article "Into A New World of Librarianship" very interesting. He says that libraries are human because the library has become a social and emotionally engaging center for learning. It is a far cry from the days when I went to the library and was shushed..............(I just dropped a pencil, and not on purpose I may add). I think that is true whit the enormous amount of programing that goes on at all the branches. A patron can learn anything at the library. If you want to read more just click on the link. http://www.oclc.org/nextspace/002/3.htm

I also read the article "To More Powerful Ways To Cooperate" by Chip Nigles. I like his comment about using the web to reach out to the entire web-not just portions of it. We have to think of everything that the web entails. It keeps changing day to day, minute by minute, second by second! If you want to read more just click on the http://www.oclc.org/nextspace/002/4.htm.

I thing that this has raised many questions about the extent of knowledge on the Web and how we can obtain that information and that it is always going to change.

WEEK # 6 TAGGING, FOLKSONOMIES, TECHNORATI

I checked out Technorati and typed in in the Blog posts, and in the Blog directory. The only difference I say was in the format in which it was displayed. The blog posts was easier to see an read and I thought more interesting. In the blog directory, there were more steps to see the actual blogs. I found the blogs in the blog posts to be related more to libraries and library systems. Check it out.http://technorati.com/tag/learning+2.0

WEEK # 6 ACTIVITY 3 Tagging, Folksonomies & Technorati

I found a great article on http://www.deviousgelatin.com/montager/image.php about disease resistant clothing. It features Olivia Ong who is a student at Cornell who is using metallic nanoparticles to develope an anti-smog jacket and a no cold or flu dress. It sounds like something that the Jetsons would wear! I found it on Technorati on Boing:Boing http://technorati.com/blogs/www.boingboing.net Check it out!

WEEK 3# ACTIVITY #3 FLICKR MASHUP AND 3RD PARTY SITES

I had fun with this site. I was not able to upload a picture to my blog. It might have something to do with the computer since I had a hard time uploading a picture before. I looked at Mappr and didn't have much luck with the site. It took forever to load and then just seem to freeze. I then tried Flickr Color Pickr. I had great fun working with the color wheel and viewing the assorted pictures and changing the colors. What fun! I then tried Montagr. This seemed to be built on the premise of Flickr Color Pickr. I loved the mosiac effect and loved to view the 500 mosiac pictures that it took to comprise one picture. Way to cool! I tried to upload a picture, but it didn't work. Here is the site that I started with http://www.krazydad.com/colrpickr/and then I move onto Montagr at http://www.deviousgelatin.com/montager/image.php.

WEEK # 6 TAGGING ANS SIACOVER DEL.ICIO.US

I leaned quite a lot for the tutorial on del.icio.us. I created my own account under del.icio.us/PLCMCL2 sader1234 and tagged an article about digital camers and food. I think the food receipes made me hungry! Got to go!

WEEK 5 LIBRARYTHING

I really liked LibraryThing. I think this could be very useful. I would like to catalogue my many many books that I have at home but, I think that will have to wait until I am finished Great Books. I can see that this would be very helpful for readers advisory. Also, I would like to compile a list of books that I would like to read.

WEEK 5 Play Week

I played around with the avitar generator. I t was fun to change her outfits and accessories. You can change her as your mood changes. What fun!
